More Than Two-Fold Jump In Grant Of Patents
The modernization drive of the Indian Patent Office has resulted in an unprecedented increase in the number of patents. The number of granted patents during the financial year 2007-08 has grown more than double in comparison with the previous year. A record number of 15,262 patents were granted as against 7539 patents during the previous year.
The surge in number of granted patents has also resulted in a number which is almost eight times the number of patents granted just three years ago. Also the number of patents granted during 2007-08, the first year of the 11th Five Tear Plan compares well with the total number of patents granted during the entire 10th Five Year Plan which was 17, 618 only. The government is carrying out the modernization of the Indian Patent Office in two phases. In the first phase Rs. 149 crore has been spent on establishment of modern integrated Intellectual Property Offices in the four metropolitan cities, computerization and enhancement of the human resources. The second phase costing 300 crore would be invested in strengthening human resources to meet the requirements of increased IP filings, construction of building for Trade Mark Registry and Intellectual Property (IP) Archives at Ahemedabad, digitization of all the IP records and establishment of a total online office. The second phase will also see construction of building for housing ISA/IPEA operations in Delhi. The Indian Patent Office was recognized by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) as an International Searching Authority (ISA) and an International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA) under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) in October 2007. Several milestones have been achieved since the patent office introduced the facility for e-filing of applications from 20 July, 2007. As if for a grand finale the government is in the process of setting up a National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (NIIPM) at Nagpur to cater to training, education, research and think tank functions in Intellectual Property Rights. These steps are expected to give a big boost to the development of an innovative culture in India. ![]() |
